Renting appliances for a short-term need: carpet cleaners, portable AC and more

When a rental beats buying an appliance you need for a week: carpet cleaners, portable air conditioners, dehumidifiers, air fryers and other one-off jobs.

Some appliances solve a problem that lasts a week: a heat wave, a flooded basement, a move-out carpet clean, a houseful of guests. Buying one means storing it for years afterward. Neighbors already own these things and rarely use them, which makes them some of the most practical rentals on Rentsome.

Good candidates for a short rental

  • Carpet and upholstery cleaners for a move-out or a spill.
  • Portable air conditioners and fans for a heat wave or a room the central air does not reach.
  • Dehumidifiers and wet/dry vacuums after a leak.
  • Countertop appliances for a party or holiday: air fryers, ice cream makers, espresso machines, extra slow cookers.
  • Sewing machines and sergers for a single project.

What to check in the listing

  1. 1Capacity and power. A portable AC is rated for a room size; a carpet cleaner needs its own solution — ask whether any is included.
  2. 2Included parts. Hoses, window kits, attachments and filters make or break the job.
  3. 3Cleaning expectations. Emptying tanks and rinsing attachments before return is the norm.
  4. 4Electrical needs. Some appliances want a dedicated outlet; run them on a heavy-duty cord if needed.

The math

Owners set their own daily rate, and you pay the rental plus a 15% service fee (minimum $2) and sales tax, only once the owner approves. For a one-week need, compare that total against the purchase price and the shelf space of owning the appliance for the next five years. A refundable deposit sized to the item’s value is held on your card and released 72 hours after return — see how security deposits work.

Frequently asked

Do I need to buy cleaning solution for a carpet cleaner?

Check the listing. Some owners include a partial bottle; most ask you to buy your own so the tank is returned rinsed and empty.

Can I extend a rental if the job runs long?

Message the owner through Rentsome. If their calendar is free they can extend the booking, and the extra days are charged at the listed rate.

What if the appliance was already faulty?

Report it to the owner with a photo or video as soon as you notice. Pre-existing faults are not the renter’s cost, and early reporting keeps it out of the claims process.

Borrow it from a neighbor instead.
