Renting
How much does it cost to rent a generator?
Day rates for portable and inverter generators from rental counters versus neighbors, what fuel and deposits add, and how to size one so you do not overpay.
Generator rental pricing swings more than almost any other item, because “a generator” covers everything from a suitcase inverter that charges phones to a 7,500-watt unit that runs a house. The first step to a fair price is knowing which one you actually need.
What drives the price
- Output. Rates climb with watts. A 2,000 W inverter and a 7,000 W open-frame unit are different products with different day rates.
- Inverter or not. Inverter units cost more per day and are worth it for electronics and for anyone who has to sleep near it.
- Duration. Counters quote four-hour, daily and weekly rates; a neighbor lists a daily rate and often a weekly one that is cheaper per day.
- Extras. Rental counters add a damage waiver and charge for fuel if you bring it back low. On Rentsome there is no waiver; the refundable deposit is the protection, and fuel is between you and the owner.
What you pay on Rentsome
The owner’s daily rate, plus a 15% service fee (minimum $2), plus sales tax, all shown before you confirm. A security deposit sized to the generator’s declared value is held on your card, never charged, and released 72 hours after return. Because generators are higher-value items, expect ID verification before the booking goes ahead; see trust score and ID verification.
Keeping it cheap
- 1Book by the week if the forecast is uncertain; it is usually cheaper than three separate days.
- 2Return it with the fuel level you received so there is no top-up charge.
- 3Run only what you need. Fuel is the real cost over a multi-day outage.
- 4Share with a neighbor on a split schedule if you only need it to cycle a fridge.
