Renting a kayak or paddleboard from a neighbor for a lake day: what you need besides the boat, how to transport it, and how to bring it back the way it left.
A kayak or paddleboard is a perfect rental: a few hundred dollars of gear that most owners use a handful of times a summer, and that takes a garage wall to store. Borrowing one for a day on the lake costs a fraction of owning, as long as you sort out transport and safety gear before you book.
What you need besides the boat
- A life jacket that fits each person. Some listings include them; if not, bring your own. It is required by law on most waters.
- A paddle sized to the boat. Kayak and board paddles are different; confirm it is included.
- For an inflatable board: the pump, the fin and the leash. For a kayak: the seat, the hatch covers and a bilge sponge.
- A way to carry it: foam blocks and straps, a roof rack, or a truck bed. Inflatable boards fit in a trunk.
Transport without damage
- 1Strap the hull down over foam blocks or a rack at two points, and add a bow line for anything over 12 feet.
- 2Check straps after the first mile.
- 3Never drag a hard-shell across gravel or concrete; carry it or use a cart.
- 4Inflatables: rinse, dry, then roll. Wet storage ruins seams.
At pickup and return
- Inspect the hull for cracks and deep gouges and photograph anything you find.
- Inflate boards to the pressure on the listing and check the valve holds.
- Agree on rinsing and drying. Bringing it back sandy or wet is the most common complaint.
- Return at the agreed time; lake gear is booked weekend after weekend in summer.

Only when the listing says so. Check the included items and ask the owner; you are responsible for having the right safety gear on the water.
What if I scratch the hull?
Minor scuffs are normal wear. Cracks or deep gouges from dragging can be claimed against the security deposit within 72 hours of return, so carry it and photograph it at both ends.
Can I rent for a whole weekend?
Yes. Pick a Friday pickup and a Sunday return; the booking card shows the total for your dates before you confirm.
