Renting a smoker or a big grill for a cookout

Pellet smokers, kamados and large gas grills from neighbors: fuel, cleaning and transport, and how to plan a brisket around a two-day rental.

A graduation party or a brisket weekend needs more grill than the patio has, and a pellet smoker is a big purchase for something you will use twice a summer. Neighbors who cook every weekend rent theirs out in between.

Which one

  • Large gas grill: fastest for burgers and dogs for a crowd.
  • Pellet smoker: set-and-forget brisket, ribs and pork shoulder.
  • Kamado: the best sear and the best smoke, but heavy and slow to learn.
  • Portable grill: tailgates and camping.

Plan the time

  1. 1A brisket is 10 to 14 hours plus rest. Book two days, pick up the day before.
  2. 2Confirm fuel: propane tank, pellets or charcoal, included or bring your own.
  3. 3Light it with the owner and check the igniter, burners or auger.
  4. 4Ask how it should come back: grates scraped, grease tray emptied, cooled.

Use the party rental checklist for the rest of the cookout, then find a grill or smoker near you.
